Outsourcing – the only IT services segment in Slovenia exhibiting growth in 2009

Ljubljana, July 01, 2010

Slovenian IT services market declined nearly 8% year on year in 2009 to total $341 million. Measured in Euros the decline was 3% compared with 2008. The fall in IT services' spending would have been even greater if the majority of IT projects wouldn't be agreed in advance, as is usual due to the IT services nature. However, a year 2009 was characterized by fragmentized, delayed or even canceled IT services projects. Although many IT investments were hindered due to crisis, IT users are increasingly aware of the potential role of IT to enhance the competitiveness of their companies and organizations.

"The continuation of the economic crisis will hinder IT investments also in 2010, but the tendency to reduce costs at the expense of the benefits of a new and alternative IT solutions will contribute to the growth of certain IT services segments. We are witnessing the transformation of the IT services market and of the whole IT market accelerated by the crisis. Crisis has also shown a selective impact on the IT services consumption - in Slovenia in 2009: project IT services suffered the most and less support IT services, while outsourcing segment grew, since more and more users are aware of the possibilities to reduce costs using advanced technical solutions and external experts, "says Katarina Rojko, Senior Research Analyst, IDC Adriatics (Slovenia).

Despite many IT users were forced to mainly maintain existing IT environment running in last year, while investments were mostly carried out in order to reduce costs and increase competitiveness, the Slovenian IT market and IT Services market are maturing. Namely the share of IT services in comparison to the total IT market increased in 2009, as well as the proportion of IT outsourcing services on the total IT services market.

In 2009, HERMES SoftLab, a ComTrade company remained the leading IT services suppliers in Slovenia, but from the demand for IT services view, the schedule is a bit different, as the first position once again went to S&T Group.

From the perspective of IT services demand the largest investors in IT services in the past year in Slovenia were financial institutions, government and telecommunications. Together those sectors accounted for almost 50% of total IT services spending, and a similar picture can be expected in 2010.
